Serafina Shawl Crochet Pattern

Posted by Kara

The Serafina Shawl is a free crochet pattern here on my blog! Read through to learn more about this fun project, or to the very end for the pattern.

Concept and Design

I was lucky enough to work with Katy from KTandtheSquid and feature her beautiful hand dyed yarn. The Serafina Shawl uses 3 skeins of sock weight yarn – every last inch of each skein! I love using hand dyed yarn for my crochet patterns and this one definitely does not disappoint.

I used Gully, Aiden, and Tyra on Squid Sock. I chose sock weight yarn for this project because of the light, airy feel and drape. Even though it’s Spring and warmer months are quickly approaching – this is still a great piece for those cool summer nights. The Serafina Shawl works as wrap or over sized triangle scarf with the option to add tassels.

Another great thing about this project is that it only uses 1 stitch – the Herringbone Half Double Crochet stitch is one of my all time favorites and you can find it in a lot of my designs. If you don’t like the look of this stitch, you can easily substitute is with a traditional Half Double Crochet. Also, don’t let fingering/sock weight yarn deter you from this project! It still works up relatively quickly and the drape is amazing!! 😊 You can also substitute with any #1-4 (sock, sport, DK, or worsted) weight yarn but you will need to adjust the color striping. This shawl would also look amazing in 1 solid color or any combo of your choosing!

What you will need:

  • Ideally, any sock, sport, DK, or worsted weight (#1-4) yarn should work for this project. I used KTandTheSquid hand dyed, sock weight (#1) yarn in Tyra, Aiden, and Gully. 1 hank of each color which is 437 yards per color, or 1311 yards altogether.
  • US size F-5 (3.75 mm) hook, or recommended hook for yarn used.
  • Tapestry needle

Gauge:

  • 9 HDC and 7 rows = 2 inches
  • Finished size is approximately 30 inches wide and spans 58 inches long

Abbreviations:

Ch(s) = chain

Ch-1, 2 sp(s) = chain 1 or 2 space(s)

HbHDC = Herringbone half double crochet

SC = single crochet

St(s) = stitch(es)

HbHDC (Herringbone half double crochet) – Yarn over, insert hook into stitch. Yarn over, pull through the stitch and the first loop on your hook (2 loops on hook). Yarn over and pull through remaining 2 loops on hook.

  • Scarf is made by repeating 10 rows to desired length. Therefore, any weight yarn with recommended hook can be used making above gauge not critical for this project.
  • Chain 2 at beginning of row counts as 1 HbHDC. Chain 1 does not count as a stitch.
  • Each row has a stitch increase of 4 except for the border row which only increases by 2.
  • [ ] = work all stitches inside brackets in the same stitch/space as indicated
  • Stitch count = side 1 stitches to the chain 2 space / chain 2 space / side 2 stitches.
  • Pattern Rows read side 1 stitches to chain 2 space, [stitches to be worked in chain 2 space], then side 2 stitches. When working in the chain 2 space, work stitches around the chain and not in any loops.

Rows 16 thru 95: repeat Rows 6 – 15, respectively, following the Color Guide below, or until desired dimensions. Do not tie off, continue to Border section below.

Color Guide:

Rows 1 – 25 = Tyra (Color A)

Rows 26 – 45 = Aiden (Color B)

Rows 46 – 65 = Gully (Color C)

Rows 66 – 75 = Tyra (Color A)

Rows 76 – 85 = Aiden (Color B)

Rows 86 – 91 = Gully (Color C)

Rows 92 – 96 = Tyra (Color A)

**Note: the Color Guide is correct for Rows 86 – 91. I wanted to be sure and have enough of Color A to add a border so I completed 6 rows of Color C. Feel free to change colors when you prefer.

Border / Row 96: With Tyra (ColorA), ch 1 and turn. SC in each st to ch-2 sp. [SC, ch 2, SC] in ch-2 sp. SC in each st to end of row. Work 1 SC in the top of turning ch from previous row.

Finish off and weave in all ends.

Optional:

  • Tassels – with remaining yarn, cut 2 12-inch strands from each color and set aside. Cut as many 10 inch strands and separate to make 3 tassels. Assemble using longer strands and trim to desired length. Attach to chain 2 space and first/last stitches from border row.
  • Blocking – steam block each tassel and shawl for quick results, or hand wash with you favorite wool wash and lay flat to dry.

**Note: a more detailed explanation of making tassels and blocking can be found in the ad free, inexpensive PDF version of this pattern. Click here to purchase.
