The Pumpkin throw blanket is a new crochet pattern just in time for Fall. Read through to find out all the details about this fun intarsia project!

Concept and Design

I am not a big fan of time consuming projects (I lose interest pretty quickly 😂). But, with Fall weather just around the corner, I really couldn’t resist working up a bunch of these pumpkin squares for fun throw blanket. I made these using a type of crochet color work called intarsia crochet. This is a fun technique to add pictures or writing into your crochet stitches. With intarsia crochet, several colors are used (often using multiple skeins or bobbins) and you drop unused yarn and then pick it up again when needed. I tried to make this as beginner friendly as possible so you only work with 2 – 3 colors at a time.

Once you complete all your squares, you can sew or slip stitch them together and add a border. The pattern includes detailed information about blocking and joining your squares. In addition to the pattern, purchase includes a Crochet Colorwork Tips PDF to help you with color changes and learn more about intarsia and tapestry crochet.

I love this design because you can easily make as little or as many squares as you want to customize the size of your blanket. Also, you could make this into a festive wall hanging by adding a loop, or a hot pad by using cotton yarn and adding a solid panel on the back. You have to love a pattern with lots of options!

Yarn

I used Hobby Lobby’s I Love this Yarn in Dark Olive, White, Brown, and Burnt Pumpkin. Originally, I wanted to use their Yarn Bee Soft & Sleek yarn in White, Kale, Pumpkin Spice, and Tobacco but white was sold out online and in stores at the time. I liked the look of the Soft & Sleek colors because they were lighter and made for a brighter pumpkin square. Since I was in a time crunch to get this pattern out, I went ahead and used the darker I Love this Yarn which still turned out well.

Note: both yarns are worsted weight but the Soft & Sleek is noticeably thicker. If you use Soft & Sleek yarn instead, I would consider going up a hook size from the pattern which will make a larger square. You can substitute any medium worsted weight yarn of your choosing.

Materials Needed

  • Any medium worsted (#4) weight yarn. I used Hobby Lobby’s I Love this Yarn in White (4 skeins, approximately 1155 yards), Burnt Pumpkin (3 skeins, approximately 800 yards), Brown (1 skein, approximately 180 yards), and Dark Olive (2 skeins, approximately 535 yards).
  • US size H-8 (5 mm) hook
  • Tapestry needle
  • Steam iron or garment steamer (optional)
  • Kids foam puzzle mat (optional)
