Grayson Hat Crochet Pattern

Grayson Hat
Posted by Kara

The Grayson hat is a new crochet pattern with subtle texture and a relaxed (slouchy) or fitted style. Read through to find out all the details!

Concept and Design

Some of my favorite patterns are simply constructed using basic stitches. The Grayson hat is definitely one of those designs – super simple but so pretty and full of texture. This hat utilizes the Herringbone half double crochet (HbHDC). This slight modification to a half double crochet creates a knot / unique appearance that I really love (you will find a lot of HbHDCs in my designs)! If you don’t like this stitch, you can also work a traditional half double crochet instead.

Grayson Hat

I prefer to work my hats from the bottom up so that’s how I designed the Grayson hat. The hat ribbing is worked flat then sewn together to form the hat band. The hat body is then worked in the round and cinched closed. Cinching the top of the hat cuts down on decrease stitches/rows and is easily covered by a pom pom (if you are using one). As with all my hat patterns, it includes 3 sizes: Toddler (1-2 years), Child (3-10 years), and Teen/Small Adult.

Yarn

For this hat design, I used 3 different colors of Lion Brand’s Basic Stitch anti pilling yarn. I really loved working with this yarn – the color choices are so pretty and it’s so soft. For the toddler size I used Baby Pink, for the child sized I used Turquoise Heather, and for the teen/adult size I used Gold Heather. Pomegranate, Pumpkin, and Eggplant also look really pretty. Whether you choose a solid or variegated yarn, the texture still shines through and will look amazing!

Any worsted (#4) weight yarn will work for this project.

Materials Needed

  • Any medium worsted (#4) weight yarn. I used Lion Brand Basic Stitch in Baby Pink (1/2 skein for Toddler), Turquoise Heather (3/4 skein for Child), and Gold Heather (1 skein for Teen/Adult). Approximately 95 – 140 yards, depending on size.
  • US size 7  (4.5 mm) hook, or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Tapestry needle
