Christmas Squares Throw Blanket Crochet Pattern: Part 1 – Intro

Christmas Squares Throw Blanket
Posted by Kara

The Christmas squares throw blanket is a new crochet pattern that is perfect for the holidays. Read through to find out all the details about this fun intarsia project!

Concept and Design

I designed these Christmas squares and bought the yarn to make this project last summer but never found the time. So, when this summer rolled around I got my act in gear to finish in time for Christmas. I made these using a type of crochet color work called intarsia crochet. This is a fun technique to add pictures or writing into your crochet stitches. Several colors are used (often using multiple skeins or bobbins) and you drop unused yarn and then pick it up again when needed. I tried to make this as beginner friendly as possible so you only work with 2 – 3 colors at a time. The candy cane and present are the most complicated – you will want to make/use small bobbins of yarn (pictured below). Once you complete all your squares, you can sew or slip stitch all the squares together and add a border.

I thought it would be fun to make this a pattern into a free blog series. It will consist of 8 parts and I will release one graph each week (starting next week) and end with blocking/seaming post on December 3rd. That way you can finish and enjoy your blanket just in time for Christmas!

If you just can’t wait, or would like the line-by-line written instructions, the PDF is available for purchase in my Etsy shop. Pattern purchase includes 3 PDFs:

1. Christmas Squares Throw Blanket_Graph version – 11 pages of color coded graphs for each square
2. Christmas Squares Throw Blanket_Written version – 15 pages of line-by-line written instructions
3. Crochet Colorwork Tips – helpful tips about tapestry and intarsia crochet with lots of working pictures

I love this design because you can easily make as little or many squares as you want to customize the size of your blanket. Also, you could make this into a festive wall hanging by adding a loop, or a hot pad by using cotton yarn and adding a solid panel on the back. Or, make one of each square for a Christmas wall hanging. Lots of possibilities!

You can use any medium (#4) worsted weight yarn. I used Hobby Lobby’s I Love this Yarn in white, red, grape, dark country blue, yellow, sungold, mid green, black, brown, graymist, and peacock. See below for exact yardage.
