Pattern Review: Abigail the Unicorn Pillow

I came across this pattern on social media and immediately had to buy it! It was the most adorable unicorn I had ever seen, and knew my daughter would go crazy for it! I purchased the pattern from Accessorize This Designs on Ravelry here. I ran out and bought the yarn (that just so happened to be on sale at JoAnn’s! Blanket yarn is crazy expensive), batting, and pillow form to start my project as soon as possible.

Then,…..I read the pattern – all 10 pages. and started feeling very intimidated! Don’t get me wrong, amigurumi is adorable but it is not for me. I don’t like making such small parts with thin yarn, and small hooks (anything less than a 3.5mm and I avoid like the plague). I also am not the biggest fan of blanket yarn because it usually makes my wrist hurt after awhile. So, all my supplies just sat on the floor in my craft room for months as I debated starting it then would talk myself out of it.

I received a set of Clover Armour hooks for Christmas and fell in love! I have had carpal tunnel issues since I was in high school, and I have yet to experience any wrist pain since using these hooks. I decided to go for it and, let me tell you – this is the way to do amigurumi!!! Big yarn, big hooks, big pieces – I think it took me 2 1/2 days from start to finish. It was a lot easier than I expected, so don’t succumb to the fear πŸ™‚

The full size version is huge! It stands as tall as my 4 year old. I hope to try making the take along version with worsted weight yarn when I get the chance. Just make sure you are holding the head straight (with the seam from row 1 perfectly horizontal) before you start sewing on your nostrils. You can see from the picture below that mine was a little crooked.

Overall, this was a really fun project once I committed to it. If you love amigurumi, or are thinking about trying a stuffed buddy, I totally recommend this project!

Happy Crocheting!
